Pixel People

Pixels made of people....pretty neat! I think it had something to do with Samsung and I can't believe that this could be done in one take!

Monsoon Season

So I got into Korea just at the start of the rainy season. Actually, it didn't rain that much for the past week, it's just been humid. The rain really started up today and the road near my house was practically flooded. It isn't miserable weather most of the time but I'll be glad when it's over!

Cute Overload

Everybody needs a bit of cuteness now and again. This is the place to get your fill! I can't remember who introduced me to it, but it is chock full o' cute. A good site to browse when you are down in the dumps! The pups section is my favorite. That's where this little guy resides.

Gravity Map of the Earth

A gravity map of the Earth and it is bizarre; you can weigh less in one country versus another.

Crash in Indiana

We were driving from Chicago to Cleveland yesterday and had the misfortune to witness this event. The car was actually fused to the truck by the time they got the fire out and it didn't look pretty. I don't like driving on the highways much! The car is actually in the picture, though you can't tell because it is under the front of the semi....ugh.

A robot that will teach you about vinegar...and maybe pickle you in it!

Presenting the Tamanoi Vinegar Robot...supposedly it only talks about vinegar, (while plotting our doom!),.,.;

Here is a video, and believe it or not it looks friendly (for now!)

'Living plugs' smooth ant journey

This is from BBC news: "A scientific study of the teamwork of army ants has discovered how they are prepared to let their fellow ants walk all over them to get the job done."
Now, I'm not the biggest ant fan in the world, but you have to admire their teamwork!

Haeundae-gu, Busan, South Korea

An interesting website about Busan (Pusan).... I think maybe a robot translated the text because it is, well, not exactly what you might expect....an example: "It ripples, as will be good the orthocenter is shallow and neither the wave which is burnt counts and not to be as the swimming beach Ansong it fixes it has a condition." I've never met a Korean who speaks or writes like that in English, so what do you think?

There is an artist/engineer by the name of Theo Jansen who makes these neat, wind-powered, moving works of art....check it out, the videos are really neat.

Humanity in miniature

I've had this link on my computer for some time but just came across it again. No idea how I found out about it anymore. (click on the image and select your language when the link opens...then click play at the bottom once it has loaded)

Definitely an interesting thing to watch...if a little troubling...

I like the "appreciate what you have" quote.

Looks like eventually....

Pan-kun the chimpanzee eats with chopsticks

Worth a look. He seems pretty smart. He feeds his dog the next batch of udon.

Back from Politics to the Land of Starcraft II

Yeah, there is a stadium full of people to watch a game demo! I'd have been there too, if I was nearby.

Jimmy Carter is Angry

(click the picture for the link)

I was used to seeing him look pleasant.... but if something pisses Jimmy Carter off you know it's gotta be bad.

I think maybe it has something to do with this....

(click picture for the link...it is definitely a photoshop job!....but still)

The Assault on Reason

Dear Al Gore,

I used to think you were a robot. I'm sorry. You are actually a pretty with-it dude. Robots are still cool though.

The Assault on Reason excerpt....

Your neighbor plays with extremely high voltage...and I like it!

How would you like this guy as your neighbor? I'd be happy, actually, but not everyone would be!

So cute! You know who you are!

Wanderlust

Yeah, it's a strange word....but that is my affliction! I just wish we had other planets to visit already! I don't consider myself much of an explorer, but I gotta go other places once in awhile!

StarCraft II

Cool, I wonder if people are celebrating in the streets (or in the PC방s) in Korea?

I'll always remember...

...that I was absolutely certain that planets existed outside of our solar system. I remember kids in grade school looking at me like I was nuts for talking about them. Well, now they are there whether you like 'em or not. Nah na na na nah!

There are at least a couple 'round these parts with life on 'em.

Oh, and Jupiter does have rings....check it out. Yeah, I'm still stuck on proving I'm right from eighth grade!

Not to insult the monkeys but....

What scares me is that he looks smarter this way. Sorry dude, you are dumber than a brick. I wish you no harm but still....dumber than a brick. I think it might be insulting to the chimpanzees that he looks this way. The link is right here.... Yeah, what people don't want to think about is that we are animals (with some smarter than others)! For better or worse....

Stephen Colbert "Singing in Korean"

It gets good about half-way into it. I love how he speaks in Korean as though it were Chinese. Good try, Mr. Colbert, but Korean doesn't sound like Chinese! His singing is a bit more on track....

And even I can say 비빔밥 better than he can! Gotta go overseas and see the place, Stephen Colbert! Still a great commentator!

Funny stuff though!

Real pizza

This guy has spent a lot of time learning to make what a lot of people would see as an almost perfect pizza. Maybe the perfect pizza is an idealogical myth...I don't know. But his thoughts definitely helped me make a much better pizza than I used to.
I have a starter that I made myself (and will soon have to start again) and learned to work with dough that I, at first, thought was way too sticky. I've since learned to work with said dough and any other pizza crust now pales in comparison. No, that's not ego talking...I'm learning from the people who can really make the stuff and I know I still suck at it!
The frozen stuff and even a lot of delivery is a waste of time now! And yeah, that is a real pizza...it doesn't need to be completely drowned in cheese (though that can be good once in awhile!).
Now, to make my own mozzarella....
Watch out though, once it gets good you'll gain five pounds easy!

Interesting

Cool stuff, DaVinci would be proud.

Pusan, South Korea....looks like I'll be living there in a month or so. The image is from Kevin Kelly's website...great picture!

The Monster Engine

This stuff is neat. Basically, he takes kids' drawings and reworks them to...well, I guess a more finished product (I don't know how to put it).

There is something wrong with me

I should be thinking about serious things but instead I'm looking at free stuff on craigslist. And why do I want a free swingset?! Actually, if I had a big backyard I would take 1000 of these....really I would, it would be surreal and sublime at the same time. Oh, and in case you happen to want the link and are in the area http://chicago.craigslist.org/wcl/zip/320519857.html

Biocoils

I was very impressed with these biocoil thing-a-ma-jigs; they are basically coils of tubing filled with algae. Why are they so cool? Cause they can generate oxygen while absorbing carbon dioxide among other useful things. Not a big deal? It's enough to let a person live underwater with no other means of life support....try that with your rose bush and see how things work out.

Anyway, here are some links: To the original biocoil project (made by high school students).
To the guy who decided to live underwater with one!

At the Cellular Level

No, not the wireless service! I remember seeing these animations a little while back and just happened across them again while looking through my bookmarks. The company that makes them, xvivo, makes such cool stuff that I find myself entranced while listening to phrases like: "secreted chemokines bound to something something proteogylcan are presented to lupicite transmembrane receptors" The musical version is interesting as well...
The full version can be seen here.

The coolest steampunk lamps I've ever seen

Definitely worth a look at his stuff. I expect some of it to start walking around; while providing light of course. Wish I could remember who told me about this stuff.

Holy Crap

Holy Crap! It is 2007!

Yeah, I know -it happened awhile back....but still, 2007. This won't mean anything unless you already know.

You do know what happens in 2013, right?

This is one possibilty....really almost no one would believe it until it happens

A bloated Engadget?

First off, I want to say that I really like Engadget. I look at their site almost every single day, but it seems like it has become bloated with ads and takes a good minute to load completely at times. Why is this? Does it maximize profits? Or is there actually useful information in all those extra little things that link to other sites (and take up so much time!)?
This isn't a burn on a great site....just wondering if anyone else has the same problem. And no, I do not use a 56k modem.....downloading at about 8 Mbps even though my upload rate still is a bit on the slow side.
